Here are some incongruities that have struck me:
- Fairy Liquid - the iconic advert, as well as the product, shows a baby, not a fairy. Fairy has never used a fairy in its advertising.
- Dog owners tend to punish puppies that have pooped in the house by rubbing their noses in the poo - a puppy is an animal that will spend the rest of its life smalling other dogs' arses, so how can that be a punishment?
- "Daylight Saving Time" – We say we're "saving" daylight, but we don't actually save anything. We’re just shifting the clocks forward or backward, and yet somehow, it's supposed to make sense.
- "Flammable" and "Inflammable" mean the same thing – You’d think “in-” would mean the opposite, like it does in words such as “invisible” or “inconsistent,” but not here. Both words indicate something can catch fire easily.
- Why do we put round pizzas in square boxes? The pizza is always round, and the box is square. Why not just make a round box or square pizzas.
- British food has a bad reputation, but only if made properly.
- The term anti-Semitism specifically refers to hostility or prejudice against Jews, yet a Semite is anyone from the Semitic language-speaking group, which includes Arabs.
Come on - think of more.
