So nearly 900 people are scooped up under terrorism laws for the heinous crime of waving a placard, and what happens? Hundreds walk out on bail the same night. If these people were really the menace Starmer claims, no magistrate would let them within a mile of daylight.
And that’s the tell. When neo-Nazi outfits like National Action were proscribed, their members were kept locked up - courts saw a genuine public threat. When Scottish separatists planted real bombs, bail was out of the question. Yet when Palestine Action supporters are branded “terrorists,” the judges wave them through. Why? Because the courts can spot the difference between a window-smasher and a bomb-maker, even if the government can’t.
Calling protesters “terrorists” was supposed to look tough. Instead it’s backfired - making ministers look hysterical, and the law look ridiculous. If everything is terrorism, nothing is. And right now, the only people intimidating the public are the government itself.
