Eggflaps in the Rain

I was driving into Bristol yesterday, following a lorry with no mudflaps along the A46 following a rain shower. It was like driving in a mud bath. Lorries should be made to have efficient mudflaps as a condition of an MoT certificate, if you ask me.

Saw someone in the pub having a snowball cocktail last night. Remember the advert for Warninks Advoocaat? Evenings and mornings, I drink Warninks. who the hell would want an eggnog in the morning? Lorry drivers, perhaps?

Any commercial vehicle over 7500 Kg has to have,by law, rear mud flaps that reach within 300 MM of the ground, they also have to have spray suppression systems fitted. Tippers and one or two other types are exempt from these regulations as (it is claimed) that they interfere eith the vehicle's intended use. In Europe there are no such exemptions. Any vehicle with these flaps or spray suppression missing will be refused an MOT certificate.
Spray suppression is basically a rear and side flap that is extremely hairy on the wheel side. The water becomes trapped in the hairs and runs down to the ground.

Roger,

It would seem many are flouting the rules. The lorry I was following yesterday was British, and a motorway maintenance lorry to boot.

Ah... if it was a Motorway Maintenance ‘ lorry then it would almost certainly have a tipping element and would therefore be exempt I am afraid.
