The Girl's Bike in Manchester

Earlier this week I took a trip to the Manchester car auction to collect a car, taking the train from Bristol Parkway and changing at Newport in Wales.

The train from Newport was a Welsh one and the announcements were in both English and Welsh, despite the vast majority of the journey being in England and almost all the passengers having boarded in England. I noticed that the Welsh word for Manchester in the announcements was Manceinion.

Now here's some useless information - "Manceinion" literally translates as "the bike of the girl" in Welsh. It's important to note that "Manceinion" is not the actual Welsh name for Manchester. It's a result of a misspelling or misunderstanding of Welsh grammar.

Here's a breakdown of the words:

"Man" - girl (singular feminine mutation of " merch")

"cein" - bike (mutation of "beic")

"ion" - feminine singular definite article (the)
