Quo For Peace

David Cameron has told the EC that Status Quo is not acceptable. They may only have 3 chords, but I grew up with their music - Pictures of Matchstick Men was one of my all-time favourites and came out when I was 13 or 14. He can't just go around saying they're unacceptable without letting us know what his taste in music is.

I wonder how many millions Bob Diamond's severance payment will be.

Watched the Chinese film Hero last night. Which is better - to live at peace under a tyrant, or for many to die in the name of freedom? Difficult question to answer and one which resonates down to today. I suppose it depends on the level of tyranny, but let's suppose it's benevolent, so your thoughts on that and whether any of us can ever be truly free?

What is freedom, really? In the US, we are free to say whatever we want, as long as we're being "nice". Of course nasty speech is technically protected but only if you're Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern or a Southpark character. We can freely move around our country, but only if you're rich enough to pay for gas and own a car. And you are free to own that car, but only if you're rich enough to buy it, able to get insurance and handy enough to maintain it. You can eat what you want, unless you live in NYC where there is a ban on an epic sized soda pop or San Francisco where ducks get to keep their livers. We are free to own a gun, but never to actually use it (shooting irritating dive bombing birds on your own property is still considered wrong). But we are also "free" to live on the streets if we prefer, free to purchase homes we cannot afford, free to take out loans we cannot pay back, free to work for ridiculously low wages and free to eat ramen noodles because they're 5/$1. We are free to get sick and walk out of the hospital with a bankruptcy-inducing medical bill. So, what exactly is "freedom"?
