Rally the Hunters

All MPs sign up to the rules of accountability. The Privileges Committee is duly a constituted an arm of Parliament and Parliament is sovereign. If that's not the case, when what on earth was Brexit all about? To call into question the authority of Parliament in these matters is the essence of being anti-democratic.

When Trump and Johnson cry witch hunt, it is a rallying cry. It is not designed to prove their innocence but to whip their supporters into a frenzy, to turn their ire upon those who were so bold as to think they could hold them accountable. Trump and Johnson, like witch hunters throughout history, have proved skillful at flipping the narrative, writing themselves as the victims even when they are the aggressors. When they cry witch hunt, it is to summon the mindless hunters to turn on those who hold people to account.

Holding politicians to account is not a witch hunt, but a liar hunt. Accusations of a witch hunt has become the mantra of the powerful who are called to face accountability.

Johnson's track record shows he is congenitally unable to tell the truth. If he's so self-unaware that he genuinely doesn't know he's lying, then he should be sectioned and institutionalised. Perhaps it's time that parliamentary candidates were vetted by a psychological test for suitability.

One thing you can guarantee is that Johnson will follow every Trumpian tactic to defend himself. Those who fawn on him are the worst, anti-democratic elements in society and don't care a fig for democracy.
