A Happy New Year at Rawlinson End

Happy New Year to my reader.

In Germany there's a New Year tradition of watching the 1962 British comedy sketch, Dinner For One, which stars Freddie Frinton as a butler. The synopsis can be found here.

I think we should start a similar tradition in the UK, but listening to Vivian Stanshall's 1978 comedy album, Sir Henry at Rawlinson End.

Stanshall, a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, was a brilliant and eccentric practitioner of the English language. His descriptions were sublime and hilarious.

Stanshall made a film version of the album in 1980, starring Trevor Howard as Sir Henry Rawlinson, who was a Lord Cardigan (of The Charge of the Light Brigade) type character. Interestingly, I wonder if Trevor Howard was chosen precisely because he'd played Lord Cardigan in the film of The Charge of the Light Brigade.

It's worth an hour of your time, as an audio or a film.

Happy listening, or watching.
