The main Christmas decorations came down on New Year's Eve and the tree was disposed of yesterday. I always say I'm glad to be shot of them, but the room looks decidedly less light and friendly without the Christmas lights.
I binge watched The Winter King on Netflix last week. It's a series based on the first book of Bernard Cornwell's take on the Arthur myth. Absolutely loved it, until Merlin did a Jedi Mind Trick and ruined the oblique reference to magic and did some actual magic.
Now Cadbury Castle, a prehistoric hill fort in Somerset, is considered by some to be the Camelot or arthurian legend; however, serious scholars don't take this very seriously, preferring Tintagel. There again, it was a centre of sub-Roman, Brythonic culture in the Dumnonian kingdom and was taken over by the invading Saxons, who had a mint there. Those living nearby, and the council, have a vested and cynical interest in advertising the links with Camelot for tourist purposes.
Anyway, we decided to visit Cadbury Castle on Saturday, calling in at nearby Castle Cary, once more scouting holiday destinations for Hay's dad and his partner. Castle Cary is a beautiful little town, a bit like Tetbury near us, but not as expensive - lots of independent shops selling really nice stuff. We settled on The George Hotel for Hay's dad's holiday destination.
We then drove some 5 miles and climbed up the hill to the top of Cadbury Castle (which is nothing more than a hill), where it was windy as hell. I was hoping to take some drone footage, but it was far too windy, as you can see on the video.
Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a longhall on the hill, which it's tempting for local Dumnonians to attribute to King Arthur.

Visited 'Cadbury Castle' decades ago (on a much calmer day) and remamber I was a bit disappointed to discover it was but a hill - but still have the fossilised shell I found there on the day. Looks like it was blowing a hooligan. (Hay needs a bit more practice with that wingsuit :)
