Bullets & Funerals

I read a news report yesterday that the British Army is training with blanks in order to save money. Frankly I’m surprised they’re allowed to use live bullets even on active service – they could kill someone or at least have an eye out with them.

Edward Kennedy was buried yesterday with full military honours. Why? All I remember him for is being a liar, drunkard and philanderer. Perhaps some of my American readers may care to enlighten me as to the reason behind his sanctification.

Bullets : I remember my father telling me that when he was in the Home Guard during WWII they were given wooden guns to guard the bridges over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal
Ted Kennedy : I suspect that your negative impression is due to the fact that what he did during the 40 years after the famous incident wasn't reported very well in this country.

Bullets: The words 'training' and 'live ammunition' sound like an accident waiting to happen. Can't they use Paintball guns? (as long as they wear the protective goggles?). Or like Alan's father, give them wooden guns that they could quickly whittle in to a sharp stick if caught behind enemy lines...
Funeral: Here is my ignorance - I had no real awareness that Edward Kennedy was still alive, let alone his reputation. I'll get me coat.

I wondered that about Teddy Kennedy too -

Apparently he ought to have been a President (had it not been for the Chappaquidick (sp?) incident, and seemed to drive quite a bit of social change policy through Congress that had some perhaps surprising intelligence to it?

On form, as always, Chairman!

You mean they actually used live ammo for practice!! I am so reassured they are now all firing blanks. ;0}

I remember Teddy Kennedys brother being shot, yes I'm that old, and the 'incident' but he seems to have been a blur since then.

No sanctification for Senator Kennedy coming from this American. You stated correctly.
