Asteroid's?

It's obviously a case of the aberrant apostrophe, but why the inconsistency?

It’s been announced that a British team is to tackle asteroids. That’s welcome news to me – I’ve been a martyr to them for decades.

I must confess I suffer from aberrant apostrophe's myself and it is much more painful than asteroid's. At least you can get some cream from the chemist's for your asteroids but I am a martyr to my apostrophe's

I also have an apostrophe problem, and don't get me started on the trouble my commas have been giving me.
