Nuclear Pay Rises

Well I’ve had my letter telling me that there’s no pay rise this year. Strike? You must be joking! If I’m upset by it I’ll simply look elsewhere for a better job paying more. Striking certainly isn’t going to produce a result and will be counter-productive. I’m bloody lucky to have a job! If I were unlucky enough to be stuck in a job where I didn’t have the skills to move elsewhere, then there would be only one person to blame.

I’m glad to hear that the UK government has decided to go nuclear. That means less reliance on oil and therefore less need to interfere in the internal politics of the Middle East in order to safeguard oil supplies, with a concomitant reduction in Islamic militants wanting to take a pop at us. The sooner we’re self-sufficient in power generation, the better.

Still no adverse reaction to my H1N1 swine flu jab – I’m still alive. Hay disputes that, but she’s biased.

Like you I think going Nuclear is a most excellent idea - what I think is foolish, short-sighted and stupid is placing nuclear power stations on low lying ground beside the sea; particularly when we are 90% certain sea levels are going to rise within the lifetime of the power station.

Well Mr Bill, as an intelligent man can you explain to me - in simple terms because I really don't understand - what the UK Government, or for that matter the US Government, see as a successful outcome in Afghanistan and what is the time frame that this is likely to happen in?

Dear Puzzled of Norwich,

Glad to see you back on the interweb.

The simple alswer is that I don't know. If war is the extension of politics by other means, then first we have to establish the political objective.

I somehow seem to remember it was the handing over of Osama Bin Laden to the West, which the Taliban refused to do. The result was that we went in to give the Taliban a good kicking, which we did, and I guess we should then have retired from the area, as holding the terriroty and changing the regime was not part of the original objective.

Regards/Chairman Bill

I thought that going nuclear was a great idea too, until I saw how much energy and oil is required to actually build nuclear power stations. They are not actually as efficient as they seem. Still, what's the alternative? Wind turbines upset the birds, wave turbines upset the fish, solar panels upset the neighbours....

The government to offer grants to everyone and anyone with a roof to enable them to cover them with solar panels.

Richard: The cost of a low wattage system is about £10k. With the grant (which finished in April 2010), the payback is something like 10 years.

Then we need a bigger grant -

Richard: Or prices of PV cells to come down. They're hideously expensive at present as not many people are buying them. It's cheaper to put a black radiator on your roof with a pump to a heat exchanger.

My pay rise this year will be the size of a uranium-235 nucleus.

its funny how there is no hoo-ha about the UK going nuclear but if Iran does it, there is mass hysteria! Oh, sorry! I forgot....they are the 'bad guys'!!

Chairman Bill said...

Steve: Mine is less than that.

Roshni: More than bad - irresponsibly mad. However, that's just the government and not the people.

They don't allow solar panels on Grade II listed buildings. Jus' saying.
